Answers to the InFLUenza fun quiz ~

1.  The flu is like a bad cold. People usually get over it in a week or so and don't have any problems.
Answer:
FALSE.  Lots of things people call the "flu" are not really INFLUENZA. Influenza is a major illness.  Every year many older people and people with other health problems simply do not recover from the flu. INFLUENZA IS THE 4TH LEADING KILLER OF OLDER PERSONS IN THE U.S.

2.  The flu is not very contagious (catching).  If you stay home when you have it you probably won't give it to anyone.

Answer: FALSE. Influenza is HIGHLY CONTAGIOUS. What's more, you are most likely to give it to others BEFORE you know you are sick.

3. The flu shot doesn't work so there's no reason to get one.
Answer: FALSE. The flu shot is very effective.  It does not protect you from regular colds but it does protect you from influenza.

4.You can get a bad reaction or even get the flu from the flu shot.
Answer: FALSE. Today's vaccine is safe, and it has been given to thousands of people without problems.  It is impossible to get influenza from the flu shot. Some people get a sore arm or a mild fever a day or so after the shot, but this is not the flu.

5.  The flu shot does not mix well with other medicines or may make other illnesses worse.  Answer: FALSE. The flu shot does NOT make your other medicines stop working nor does it make your current illnesses worse.

6.  Your doctor wants you to get a flu shot.
Answer: TRUE. If you are 65 years old or older, or if you have other medical conditions (such as heart disease, lung disease or diabetes), your doctor and the U.S. Public Health Service STRONGLY RECOMMEND that you get a flu shot every Fall.
